Officer Earle M. Ames was returning to the CHP Stanislaus office after a special duty assignment in Oakland. Officer Ames was traveling late in the evening through very heavy fog when his motorcycle collided with a city bus. The bus was reportedly almost invisible in the fog because of its newly installed vapor lights. Officer Ames was thrown from his motorcycle and killed.
Officer Ames had served with the California Highway Patrol for 2 years and had previously served as the chief of the Newman Police Department for 4 years. He was survived by his wife, 9-year-old daughter, and sister.
Officer Ames is honored at the Stanislaus County Peace Officer Memorial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, The California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 22-W, Line 6.
