WILLARD BAUM, RETIRED PP&L VICE PRESIDENT
Willard U. Baum, 88, of Allentown died Monday in Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth H. (Ritter) Baum. They were married 61 years last June.
A graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology, Philadelphia, with a degree in electrical engineering, he was employed by Pennsylvania Power and Light Co., Allentown, for 40 years before retiring in 1970 as vice president of system power and engineering.
Rising through the ranks, he became manager of system planning in 1963 and was promoted to chief electrical-mechanical engineer in 1964. He was named assistant vice president of system power and engineering in 1966 and became vice president in 1967.
He was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 1968 for contributions to the planning and development of large utility systems.
Baum was state director of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers for several years, and in 1964, was named engineer of the year in the Lehigh Valley Chapter PSPE and the following year was Pennsylvania engineer of the year.
Vice president and chairman of the system-planning committee of the Pennsylvania Electric Association, he represented PP&L on the planning and engineering committee of the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection and participated in the planning for the Keystone and Connemaugh minemouth generating stations.
He is included in Who's Who in Technology Today.
Born in Perkasie, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Birdie (Unfried) Baum.
He was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, council vice president and served on various committees at Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown. He was formerly choirmaster of Trinity Lutheran Church, Perkasie.
He was a member of the American Guild of Organists for 28 years and served a year as Lehigh Valley Chapter Dean, and was a tympanist with the Philadelphia Junior Civic Symphonic Orchestra for three years and taught percussion students.
Survivors: Wife; daughter, Nancy, wife of Byron Crandall of Columbus, Ind.; son, Dr. Dennis W. of Danville, Calif.; three granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
