Age 23 years enlisted for 3 months April 24, 1861 as Private with Co. H. 10th Illinois Infantry mustered out July 29, 1861 re- enlisted August 17, 1861 as Private with Co. B. 28th Illinois Infantry discharged March 3, 1862 at Pittsburgh Landing for disability. Re-enlisted August 4, 1862 as Corporal with Co. K. 24th Wisconsin Infantry discharged for disability March 18, 1863.

He applied for his Pension on May 31, 1877 as invalid app# 236,865 his mother Martha Baker applied for his pension on March 27, 1890 from the state of Colorado app# 417,977
the pension states he served with Co. K. 24th Wis. Infantry as Corp. also Co. B. 28th Ill. Infantry as Corp.

BAKER, RICHARD D. - Death News Article - at Canon City - Old, Brave and Well Known Veteran Answers the Long Roll Call at Canon City. One of the oldest and most respected citizens. He had rose at his normal time and had stumbled in the home. His body was found by his aged father. He first enlisted in Illinois and later taken ill and was discharged. He returned home and regained his health and again enlisted in the Thirty-fourth Wisconsin. He was wounded in the battle of Shiloh. He returned home and had been discharged with a curvature of the spine, as a result of a wound. Later he joined a volunteer company and went to the front, ending his war life with the battle of Baton Rouge. He came to Canon, 10 years ago. His remains will be laid to rest at 2 o'clock tomorrow by Greenwood Post No. 10, G. A. R., of which organization he was an honored member. Rocky Mountain News 1/7/1890 Pg 1
