MRS. ELLEN BADGER

Mrs. Ellen Badger, early Lucas county pioneer, died at her home, 735 N. Main street, in Chariton, on Monday evening, September 24, 1934, at the advanced age of 93 years, 11 months and 12 days.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Frederick Nichol, of the First Presbyterian church, were held at the Dunshee Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, and burial took place in the Chariton cemetery.

Ellen Berry, daughter of John M. and Annie Berry, was born in Monroe county, Indiana. With her sister, Mrs. Isaac Julian and husband, and a party of relatives, she came from Indiana when she was about thirteen years old, to Lucas county, Iowa, making the trip in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. There were also two horse teams, but the horses were used most of the time to drive the herd of cattle which they brought with them.

They arrived in Cedar township, near Russell, on October 9, 1853. Mrs. Badger was the last surviving member of the party of sixteen who made the trip from Indiana. For over eighty years her home had been in this vicinity. She endured all the hardships of pioneer life and saw this county grow from a few inhabitants to its present population, and has witnessed the country's development from the prairie grass to a cultivated land.

On Christmas night, December 25, 1866, she was married to Samuel Badger, who preceded her in death ten years ago. Three children were born to this union, Emma, John Cyrus and Clara Belle. The son preceded her in death in 1893. The two daughters were with and ministered to her with a tender devotion during her declining years and her last illness.
