Immigrated to Beardstown IL in 1851, where he married Isabella Campbell, who had come over on the same ship. They moved to Muskegon MI in 1863 where he was a merchant. He became City Clerk & read for the law. As an attorney, he became a civic leader, Register of Deeds and, for 15 years a member of the Board of Education. Muskegon has named a school & a street after him. His son, John Russel McLaughlin became a member of the U.S. Congress. Another son, Professor and Pulizer Prize-winning historian Andrew Cunningham McLaughlin, is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor MI.
