The name Mahan was first spelled MacMahan but later dropped the Mac. The first known ancestor was Patrick Mahan who married Rebecca Kelly.
He served in the revolutionary war and were neighbors of the Ball family.
Their son, Alexander Mahan married Catherine Ball, daughter of John and Mary Ball.

Both are buried on the Mack Anderson farm near Climax, Virginia with other Mahan
Mike from Pittsylvania stated:
"The Mahan cemetery is on Green Pond Rd. The Anderson cemetery is on Spring Garden Rd.
Patrick is probably buried on Green Pond Rd., but there is no inscribed stone for him."
"I have all the documentation to prove this if you need. A letter from his great grandson listing Mary as his wife. Land records listing Mary in a sale to Richard Mercer. I am a direct descendant of John Ball and all the families(relatives I am in touch with who live near me) records have his wife as Mary. I have his will that lists his grandson John Mahan as executer and estate account of Johns will by John Mahan."
