Barbara Kay James, age 65, of Granite, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her husband and four children on Friday afternoon, February 6, 2009 after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Barbara was born on July 31, 1943, in Hollis, Oklahoma to Claud and Lois (Bryson) Dill. After graduating from Ron School in 1961, she married Ronnie James on October 26, 1962, in Hollis. She attended Southwestern State College, in Weatherford, and then lived a short time in the Arnett Community while Ronnie taught school at Arnett of Hollis. Moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa, Barbara and Ronnie attended Northern Iowa University and then moved to Los Angeles, California for three years where she ran a home daycare service while Ronnie was teaching. In 1968, they returned to Granite where she worked as the school secretary, while Ronnie was the high school principal. In 1970, shortly after earning her degree from Southwestern, Barbara began a long career with the State of Oklahoma, serving with the Oklahoma State Employment Service, in Altus, until 1973, and then transferring to Greer and Harmon Counties with the Department of Human Services as a Juvenile Justice Specialist until 1999, when she retired. Gardening, walking, biking, reading, and traveling were some of her pastimes, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her loving husband, children and grandchildren whom she adored.
Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jim Dill and one sister, Pat Wood, she is survived by her husband, Ronnie; one daughter, Ginger James Allen and husband Blake of LaJolla, California; three sons, Jody James and wife Sandy of Lubbock, Texas, Jon James and wife Theresa of Abilene, Texas, and Justin James and wife Jennifer of Arlington, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Celia Allen, Juliet Allen, Evan James, Eric James, Coralie James, Anna James and Emily James; one sister, Suzy Sheriff and partner Bill Hansen of Portsmouth, Rhonde Island; three brothers, Claud Dill, Jr. and wife Linda of Norman, Bill Dill and wife Karen of Hollis and Denzil Dill of Arlington, Texas; one brother-in-law, Chester Wood of Broken Arrow; three sisters-in-law, Rita Jenkins and husband Hugh of Yukon, Charla Perry and partner Al Smith of Edmond and Denise Hise of Edmond; one brother-in-law, Ray James and wife Linda of Edmond.
