Arnold O. Beckman, scientist, inventor, musician, college professor, philanthropist, and founder of Beckman Instruments (now Beckman Coulter, Inc.) created instruments such as the pH meter and a variable resistance device called a Helipot®, which advanced the study and understanding of human biology. Beckman was born on April 10, 1900 in Cullom, Illinois. Finding an old chemistry book in the attic of the family home sparked his first interests in science. Beckman's interest in music also started at an early age. While a teenager and during his college days, he played piano accompaniments for silent movies to help support the family and pay for his education. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1922. This was followed by master's degree in physical chemistry one year later. He earned his doctorate in photochemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1928 and became a member of the faculty shortly thereafter. He taught chemistry there from 1929 to 1940. It was during this period that he founded Beckman Instruments and invented the acidometer (later termed the pH meter). In all, Beckman would obtain fourteen patents for his inventions during his long and productive life. His direct involvement with his company spanned a period of almost fifty years. After his retirement in 1983, Beckman focused on philanthropy. He established several foundations and contributed more than $400 million to scientific research and education. Beckman lived by seven rules, which governed his life. He was often quoted with one in particular: "Always strive for excellence – there's no substitute for it." (bio by: Tim Pettay)
