Family patriarch Julius Darryl Gehrke, 82, of Kelso died April 26, 2014, at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver.

He was born Sept. 4, 1931, in San Francisco, to Julius Carl and Hallie (Sturgeas) Gehrke. Pete and his siblings were unable to attend school due to their rural location. Nonetheless, Pete took pride in the fact that he taught himself to read and write.

On Jan. 22, 1954, he married Janis Moody in Reno. They moved to Kelso from Boonville, Calif., in 1967.

Pete was a logger and worked hard to support his family. He enjoyed camping, especially at Walupt Lake, traipsing around in the woods, fishing and trips to the ocean. He also enjoyed violin music. Pete was a quiet, private man who had a deep love for his family.

He was baptized with his father in 1945 as a Jehovah's Witness. He found great joy in his love of God Jehovah and His creations. One of his greatest loves was sharing his Biblical hope for the future with others. He believed "the righteous will inherit the Earth in a peaceful new world" (Psalms 37:29). He looked forward to the day when "all those in the memorial tombs will hear His voice and come out" to paradise on earth (John 5:28-29).

Pete is survived by his wife, Janis Gehrke; three daughters and their spouses, Donna and Elwyn Hamilton, Linda Gehrke and Julie and David Mattison; six grandchildren, James Hamilton, Isaac Mattison, Deanaca Reid (Jordan), Hannah Nesterkin, Isaac Mattison, Jake (Sumer) Mattison and Travis Mattison; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by three siblings and their spouses; and a daughter, Norma Rak.

A memorial service is planned for 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Kelso Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Pete's nephew, Michael Gehrke, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 408 N 23rd Ave., Kelso, WA 98626 or to the family to assist with final expenses.

Arrangements are by Cascade Northwest Funeral Chapel at Green Hills Memorial Gardens & Crematory.
