Ben Hogan
Birth: Aug. 13, 1912
Erath County
Texas, USA
Death: Jul. 25, 1997
Fort Worth
Tarrant County
Texas, USA

Professional Golf Player. Beginning as a caddy at the age of eleven, he turned pro in 1931 and went on to win 63 P.G.A. sponsored golf tournaments and a total of 71 tournaments overall.  Among these were four U.S. Opens, two Masters, two P.G.A. championships and a British Open. He was given the nickname of "The Hawk" for his determined style of play. In February, 1949, Hogan and his wife were seriously injured in an accident of a foggy Texas highway when their vehicle was struck by a bus. Judging by the muliple injuries he received, doctors questioned if Hogan would ever walk again, much less play golf. However, only eleven months later he tied for first place in the Los Angeles Open. He lost in the ensuring play-off, but that failed to dim the comeback he had made. Just five months later, he won the U.S. Open in a three-way play-off. Two years later, he captured the Masters, U.S. Open and the British Open. Competing on the tour into the 1960's, Hogan retired and started a golf club manufacturing company. His book, Five Lessons: The Moderan Fundamentals of Golf was first published in 1957 and continued through a reported 64 printings.
