The son of William and Mary Cabell (Breckinridge) Warfield, Ethelbert served as President of Miami University in Oxford, Butler Co OH from 1888 to 1891.
Ethelbert was quite a personage. Having been educated at Princeton University, Wadham College at the University of Oxford and Columbia University Law School, he was a professor of history and college president, serving as Miami University's youngest at aged 27 yrs.
Ethelbert brought football to Miami in 1888 with the help of Professor Walter Ray Bridgman, who played for Yale, and Professor Marc Parrott who played for Princeton.
After three years as Miami's president, he served as president of Lafayette College 1891-1914 and again at Wilson College, until his retirement in 1936.
Ethelbert was a Presbyterian Church elder, director of Princeton Theological Seminary and an officer in the Sons of the American Revolution. He authored several historical works, one which can be viewed digitally at The Kentuckian Digital Library:
