Robert LeRoy Schmid was born in Bern, Idaho on September 12, 1924. During World War II, he was a cryptographic mechanic with the United States Army with General Eisenhower's Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces in London, England.


There he met Frances White, a British cryptographer. Frances and Robert were married on June 2, 1945 in Versailles, France. Their first daughter, Pamela, was born in England. The family lived in Frankfurt, Germany for a few years after the end of World War II. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Robert began his education at the University of Utah and then the College of Law. Later, he received an LLM from the University of Washington.


Robert was a Law Librarian and a pre-law counselor at the University of Utah College of Law. He later became a teaching Professor at the law school. Later, a second daughter, Patricia, was born. Robert and Frances shared over sixty-one years of a wonderful marriage. Frances passed away in 2007.


Robert is survived by Pamela and Michael Jorgensen of Salina, Utah, and Patricia Schmid of Sandy, Utah. He is also survived by grandchildren Robert and Debi Jorgensen and great-grandson William of Orem, Utah; and Richard and Joanne Jorgensen, great-granddaughters: Jennifer, Emily and Megan of Sandy, Utah. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Frances, his parents, sisters Anna Vigos, Dorothy Gilgen, Emma Lou Skinner and Julia Schmid. Survivors include Alice Gortcinsky, Zenna Mae Bridges, David Schmid, Marvin Schmid, Ivins Schmid, Connie Jensen, and their families.


Robert will be remembered for his patience, kindness, decency, his love of puns, and for taking pictures of everything and everyone.


Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, with a visitation one hour prior to the services at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East), East Milclreek, Utah.
