Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Vermilion, Illinois, he served as a Private in Company A, 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Union Army. In actions at Sailors Creek, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, Private Holmes alone captured the flag of the Confederate 27th Virginia Infantry, during the charge on their position. For extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 3, 1865. He died at the age of 70 in Appleton City, Missouri. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
