15 Year old Girl Admits Slaying Sweetheart, $20 Armed Robbery

Hazard, KY, AP - An examining trial was held today for a teenage girl who shot and killed her sweetheart during a drinking party and then used the pistol to hold up a restaurant.

Miss Jamie Young, 15, surrendered to police shortly after the shooting yesterday and was held without formal charge.

Police Chief Bob Heath said the bluejean-clad girl who had been babysitting gave a detailed story of her early-morning actions but was unable to explain them.

The chief said she admitted shooting Irvine Combs, 25, outside his liquor store at nearby Lothair. Then she said she walked to a drive-in restaurant and took $200 at gunpoint.

Walking into Hazard, she met Jim Prater, who disarmed her after she threated: "I've already killed one man, and if you don't get out of my face, I'll kill you."

The girl ran to the house of Douglas Combs (no relation to Irvine) and asked him to call the police.

Chief Heath said the girl told this story:

She called Combs from the home she was babysitting and arranged for him to pick her up around midnight. He brought whiskey from the store and they drove around drinking and talking.

Returning to the store, each drank two bottles of beer and "got drunk" in Combs' car. Combs waved the pistol and told her, "If you don't believe I'm drunk, I'll kill you." When he slumped over in a stupor, she grabbed the pistol and it fired accidently.

The girl lived with her mother, Mrs. Maude Young. She said her father died 13 years ago.
