His obituary from Ohio Co. Historical Society...Died...
February 8th, Mr. James C. Adkinson of Moore's Hill, Indiana.
He was born in Switzerland County, Ind., on September 3d, 1839, and was consequently over twenty-eight years old.
He was the first man in Switzerland county that volunteered after the call was made for seventy-five thousand men. He served three months. He was in the battle of Cheat River, and present when Gen. Garnett was killed. He was taken sick immediately afterward, and was never well again. During the last two years, he was confined to the house; and, most of the tiem, was unable to turn himself in bed. His disease was rheumatism. He bore his sufferings with great patience and firmness and died in peace.
He was a good English scholar, and a successful teacher. All who knew him were his friends. One well acquainted with him says, that he was never known to give cause of offence to any one. Though not a member of church, he always showed great respect to religion; and over conducted himself with the utmost order and propriety.
He has left a father, mother, brother and seven sisters to mourn their loss.
