Birth: Mar. 12, 1855
Death: Nov. 2, 1913

Hugh Griffith, son of Joseph Griffith and Elizabeth Sexton Griffith, was born March 12, 1852 and died at the Universal Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 2, 1913, at the age of 61 years, 8 mo. and 10 days. He was the third son and seventh child of a family of eleven, seven of whom are living, three having died young.

He was born in Scott county, Tenn., was brought to Russell County, Ky., when eleven years old. Came to Kansas in 1873, with his mother, two brothers and four sisters, the father having died April 23, 1863.

The oldest son, Richard, was then married and came on about a year later. The brothers left to mourn his demise are Richard, Yewell and Columbus; the sisters are Mrs. W.L. Carter and Mrs. G.R. Wilfoung, of Belle Plaine, Mrs. Cooper of Blackwell, Okla., and Mrs. A.B. Cornwell of Wichita, all of whom were present at the funeral service.

Mr. Griffith was married to Miss Linnie Lounsberry Oct. 2, 1864. To this union, six children were born, two of whom have preceded their father, four of whom were present as follows: Mrs. Mae Oakley, Jay, Jeanette and Ada. Their mother died May 16, 1909.

Last week, Mr. Griffith started on a visit to his old home in Kentucky. At Kansas City, he was taken ill and death was the result. Yewell, his brother, went up to Kansas City, as soon as the message came, and looked after shipping the body here. It arrived Tuesday morning and was met by a large number of friends and neighbors, and taken to the Presbyterian church where the services were held at 2 p.m. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder Jos. E. Cain of Wichita, an old friend of the family, assisted by the pastor of the Presbyterian church, Rev. Thos. Price. The church would not hold the number who came to pay their respects to the departed. The floral offerings were rich in profusion and number, some of the pieces being creations of the florist's art.

The burial took place at the Belle Plaine cemetery.
