Company K, 47th Virginia Infantry, Barton's Brigade, G.W.C. Lee's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Caroline County VA; light complexion, 5'9", a 17 year-old Laborer.
Enlisted on 3/5/1862, he was mustered into "K" Co. VA 47th Infantry as a Private.
Hospitalized 1/25/1865 Richmond, VA.
Oath of Allegiance at Petersburg, Va.

On 2/9/1923, a 91-year old farmer living in Doswell (Caroline County, Va,), he applied for admittance into the Robert E. Lee Camp Confederate Soldiers' Home due to "old age", and not having any close relatives nearby. He was ordered for admission on 3/8/1923. He discharged at his own request 5/24/1923; reentered the Home 10/3/1923. He died there.

The 47th Infantry Regiment was formed in June, 1861, with men recruited in Caroline, Middlesex, Essex, and Stafford counties. (bio by: BigFrench)

In memory of one who shared the same Confederate Company K, 47th Infantry Regiment VA. with my Great Grand Uncle John William Vaughan of Caroline County, VA. who served as a nurse since he was too young to fight.

The 47th Virginia roster states this soldier, my great grandfather, was 17 when he enlisted in March 1862 making his birthday 1845 not 1832 as shown on 1923 application to Old Soldiers home. Family recor4ds verify the 1845 date. The Veterans Administrat...(Read more)
