Birth: Aug. 16, 1829
County Cavan, Ireland
Death: Apr. 1, 1878
Lincoln County
New Mexico, USA

Frontier peace officer. William Brady was a Civil War veteran and Lincoln County Sheriff. He was murdered on the main street in Lincoln along with his deputy, George Hindman, by shots fired from ambush by Billy the Kid and several of his gang. Brady and Hindman were buried on Brady's ranch east of Lincoln. The graves are in a pasture about 100 yards south of US Hwy 380 opposite the old Fritz house, which can be seen about a quarter mile north of the highway. There is a U.S. military marker for Brady, with the inscription "Capt. Wm. Brady, Co. A, 1 N.Mex. Cav." Sheriff Brady is memorialized at Panel 13, W-3 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

On arrival in New York City from Ireland in 1851, Brady enlisted in the U.S. Army. He spent five years in Texas rising to the rank of sergeant and then transferred to Fort Craig, New Mexico. In 1861 he joined the New Mexico Volunteers as a first lieutenant and later promoted to captain. He fought at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. In 1862 he married Maria Bonifacia Chavez from Corrales, New Mexico. In 1864 he was appointed as commandant at Fort Stanton, and then served at several other New Mexico forts until his discharge in October 1866, at the brevet rank of Major.

Brady and his family lived on a ranch four miles east of Lincoln. He was elected Sheriff in 1869. In 1871 Brady was elected as the first representative from Lincoln County to sit in the Territorial Legislature. In 1876 he was re-elected sheriff.
