HERBERT F. (Herb) ENNIS, SR., 86, died surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Shands @ University of Florida.

Born August 3, 1925 in Cypress Creek, NC to Herron P. and Vassie Ennis, Herbert grew up the youngest of 5 boys in Teachey, NC. After serving overseas in the United States Army and Air Force, he moved to Richmond, VA as a young man where he met his wife of 60 years, Emma Lee Allen. In 1957, they moved their young family to Gainesville where he spent the remainder of his days.

Herb was a retired Salesman for Swift & Company, and Gruver Meat Company. He also worked as a Funeral Attendant with the former Jones-Johnson and Johnson-Hayes Funeral Homes, and most recently Forest Meadows Funeral Home.

Herbert was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, 57 year Mason, 32nd degree, raised in the Sandston Lodge Richmond, VA and was a founding member of the R.T. Shafer Masonic Lodge in Gainesville before joining Micanopy Lodge 129 F & A M. Herbert was active in the Order of Eastern Star in Gainesville and Micanopy. He was an Honorary Alachua County Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Joseph Crevasse and Lou Hendry. Herbert loved helping people, especially children and positively affected the lives of many as an Ambassador for the Shriners Children's Hospital. Herb enjoyed spending time with family and friends, Gator football and will be fondly remembered as a gracious host of many parties at his home. Herb delighted in passing out candy where ever his daily visits took him, often affectionately being called "The Candy Man".

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma Lee Ennis of Gainesville; daughter, Linda Hunt of Gainesville; son Herbert F. Ennis, Jr., of Gainesville; Five grandchildren: Patricia Ennis Garzon (David), Herbert F. Ennis, III "Bubba" (Kristal); Jesseca Hunt (Devon Suggs); Melinda Hunt Chewning (Cyle); Matthew Hunt (Katheryn Beauregard); and three great-grandchildren: Joshua Garzon, Alexis Garzon and arriving soon, Wyatt Ennis, all of Gainesville, and many nieces and nephews

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Meadows Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Forest Meadows Memorial Park, Central 4100 N.W. 39th Ave., Masonic Rites will be conducted graveside.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Shriners Children's Hospital and/or aluminum can donations to Grace Presbyterian Church in Gainesville.
