Luther was a son of Emma Romberger Hoffman and her husband Frank Hoffman. He was named for his grandpa, his mother Emma's father, Luther Romberger, an Illinois pioneer from Pennsylvania who was an uncle of my great grandpa Daniel H. Romberger.
The subject of this memorial, Luther Romberger Hoffman spent much of his life in Michigan (Detroit and later Grosse Pointe area) and later in California. A 1914 or 1917 listing in "Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers" says of him-
"Structural engineer, Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, 710 Washington Arcade, (Residence, 856 Second Avenue), Detroit, Michigan." Another listing from the American Society of Civil Engineers from 1923 also shows that at the time Luther Romberger Hoffman lived in Detroit.
In 1935, during the Depression, Michigan was carved into seven districts, and he was assistant director for region four, Detroit.
There was a man of his name involved during the WW II era in Camp Topaz, which was part of the relocation of Japanese Americans, but that was Luther T. Hoffman and not our gent.
Luther Romberger Hoffman married Bertha Crockford, and they had a daughter named Charlotte. Charlotte married Rear Admiral John H Kaufman.
In 1910's census, Luther may be found out on his own at age 23 in Detroit. It is likely the census-taker made a mistake, as he is listed as living with his "mother" whose name appears to be Emma D. Bucke - incorrect as we know her to be Emma (nee Romberger) Hoffman. Even this Emma's age does not match, as she is listed as only age 34, nonsensically making her age 11 to have given birth to Luther... big mistake, and we can only hope the remaining information is correct. Luther reports that he and his father were born in Pennsylvania, and his mother born in Illinois. Young Luther is listed as an architectural draughtsman (draftsman).
He might have cut a nice figure. On his World War II "old man's draft" card, Luther, age 56, is described as standing 6 foot 2 and 1/2 inches, 215 pounds, light complected, with brown eyes and grey hair. By this time he is self-employed, the firm not named but address listed as 1608 Industrial Bk Blvd, Detroit, Michigan. His "person who will always know where you are" is his wife, Bertha C. Hoffman. Luther lists his date of birth as April 21, 1886 in Philadelphia. His current address is in Grosse Point Park at 1143 Buckingham Road, telephone Tuxedo 2-1377.
