John Wesley BOYKIN, "Big," was born to Barton L. BOYKIN of Screven County & Sarah Emily ENECKS, who had been born in South Carolina. He lost his father in 1858 and his mother in January of 1860 to typhoid (or another disease). At the enumeration of the census in June of 1860, his sister Emeline BOYKIN, "Em" (born 1841, the eldest of the orphans), still maintained their family household, which included "Big" and four of their five additional siblings, born 1850-1857:
Josephine M. BOYKIN, "Jo",
Virginia Matilda BOYKIN BRYAN, "Jenny",
William T. BOYKIN, "Willie", and
• Preston Brooks BOYKIN.
The previous household enumerated that day was that of their uncle, Tobias BOYKIN, who had been appointed administrator for her parents' estates in May of 1860; their remaining sister,
Sarah Catherine BOYKIN WILLIAMS, "Mesh",
lived in Tobias' household in 1850 and 1860. Later, "Big" lived in the household of another uncle and aunt, John Baptist BOYKIN & Mary Jane ARCHER . In December of 1861, his uncle John B. BOYKIN was appointed guardian of "Big" and his five younger siblings.

C.S.A. Service Record: Screven County, Georgia "Black Creek Volunteers" 1st Company B 25th Regiment GA Volunteer Infantry. Private - October 11, 1861. Appointed Corporal. Relieved from duty by Conscript Act September 15, 1862.

"Big" married Lucy Ann WILLIS, daughter of Ernest William WILLIS and Elizabeth E. SPEAR, in 1872, and they had seven children who survived infancy, born 1874-1890:
• Daisy Wray BOYKIN POTTER RUSSELL,
George Pierce BOYKIN,
Jesse Winwood BOYKIN,
• Juanita Viola BOYKIN SCOTT, "Nita,"
Rev. Melville Bryan BOYKIN,
• Claudine E. BOYKIN JOYNER, and
Albert Wesley BOYKIN, "Bones".

The death certificate for John W. BOYKIN indicates that he was born in Screven County, as were his parents, "Bartwell" BOYKIN & "Kate" ENECKS (his parents had died more than six decades earlier and the details had blurred). He was a widower and retired, who lived near Halcyondale in the 259th District of Screven County, and died in or near Sylvania, in the 34th District of Georgia, at the age of 80 years. The informant for his death certificate was his son, Jesse Winwood BOYKIN of Sylvania.
