Brita Olson Dahling's husband, Thomas Niklas DAHLING, was a shoemaker in their little village in Sweden. They had four young children. Then in 1866, he suddenly died "from blood poisoning following the extraction of a tooth." Their youngest child was not yet two.

In 1869 the fatherless family was given a chance to emigrate to the United States. But they could only afford passage for one person, and so her oldest daughter came alone. She was only twelve! Five years later, after scrimping and saving on both sides of the Atlantic, Brita came with her three younger children.

Her grand daughter Louisa Metcalf Denison said of her, "When they come over, grandma bought this little log house and bought her a loom and she weaved for a living. She wove the most beautiful rugs and carpets. She even wove dress skirts... Grandma was such a, oh, she was a sweet woman."

By 1896, Brita's three younger children had all died. She died of pneumonia in 1907. At the time of her death, only the oldest of her four children had any surviving children, but today - a hundred years later - her descendants number in the hundreds, probably nearing a thousand by now. I am one of those - she was my 2nd great grandmother.

Daughter of Rasmus OLSON & Britta Marie GRELSDOTTER.
