After the death of her husband in 1924, Sudie had a hard time excepting it and lost her mind. Her older daughters Clyde and Essie, son Thad and son-in-law Russell Flowers took care of her, and finished raising the younger children. Sudie was admitted to Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a short time. At death she had dementia for several years. Her death certificate states "Her body had wasted away with her mind. No physician had recently seen her, but her family had given her proper attention and care." She died of breast cancer.
