The Booneville Independent
August 30, 1935
Tuesday afternoon, Bruce Lester, aged about 25, was caught in a gravel pit by falling rocks and badly hurt. He received a wound about the eye and forhead, causing intense pain. Blood flowed freely from nose, eyes, and ears. One leg was broken in three places and perhaps some of the bones crushed and he was otherwise bruised.
He was rushed to the Clinic where an examination was made and then carried to the Hospital. Thursday afternoon his condition seemed more favorable and he was not sufferin so much.
Mr. Lester was helping load gravel for Mr. Bullock. This gravel was being spread on roads near town. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lester and is married. They have an infant child about two weeks old. The many friends of the family deeply regret the accident.
( According to Avery Lester, years later, Bruce met the doctor on the street. The doctor told him, "I would have done more to your face if I had thought you were going to live." According to his granddaughter...his face was quite damaged which was obvious.)
Bruce Lester was a member of the Masonic Lodge. The traditional Masonic ceremony was conducted at his graveside.
Bruce Lester , in his early years, performed in a gospel quartet as the bass singer.
Grandaddy Bruce, as we called him, was a man of very few words. As a child, I worried for years that he couldn't talk because he was so very quiet.
