Michael was the son of Rudolph and Leah Humble Essick. He married Mary Snodgrass in 1857 in Washington County, PA where the couple lived. They moved their family to Iowa about 1875. They had 7 children.
Military History: Company "C", 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, Civil War: called the "Keystone Cavalry".
Mustered in September 8, 1862; promoted to Wagoner, January 1, 1864
Mustered out, May 31, 1865
"The 22nd Cavalry, otherwise designated as the 185th Regiment of Pennsylvania troops, contained seven companies (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) which were recruited in Washington County, the first two, A and B, having been raised in the spring and summer of 1861, and the others in the summer and early fall of 1862.
