Morgan Gardner Bulkeley
Birth: Dec. 26, 1837
East Haddam
Middlesex County
Connecticut, USA
Death: Nov. 6, 1922
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Connecticut Governor, US Senator, Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Executive. Born in East Haddam, Connecticut, to a prominent Hartford, Connecticut family, he enlisted in the Union Army in May 1862 during the Civil War, being mustered in as a Private in Company G, 13th New York State Militia Heavy Artillery. He served until he was discharged in September 1862 when his three-month enlistment was up (his older brother, a Captain in the Union army, died of disease while on active duty in 1864). After the war he became a successful financier, had a hand in the founding of the United States Bank of Hartford, and served as President of the Aetna Insurance Company (a business co-founded by his father) for 43 years. In 1874 he formed the Hartford Dark Blues baseball team, which was part of the National Association League. When the league folded in 1876, the Dark Blues jumped to the newly formed National League, and Morgan G. Bulkeley was named the League’s first president. Although he served a single year in this capacity, he worked hard to make the professional game respectable in society. In 1937 he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a pioneer. In 1880, he was elected as a Republican the Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, serving two terms. He was then elected as the 54th Governor of Connecticut, serving from 1889 to 1893 and as a Republican Senator to the United States Senate, serving a single term from 1905 to 1911. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

With only three photos here, one of which is the memorial for Bulkeley's son, I offered to let the site use an autographed photo of Bulkeley I own (since there are no photos whatsoever of Bulkeley posted), but the F-a-G philistines rejected the offer. Inc...(Read more)
