Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he was the Secretary of the Indiana State Senate, when he assisted in organizing the 7th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. Commissioned Captain of Company B in the 7th Regiment, he served in field actions and was promoted Colonel in October 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the war, he was appointed United States Attorney for the District of Indiana, serving 1869 to 1872. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1891. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
