I know he was in the Civil War, fighting for the Union, in Hickory Co., MO but I haven't figured out which one exactly is our John Carroll Pitts from this list of three soldiers:

John C. PITTS, Union, Lieutenant, Capt. Dawson's Company B, Hickory County Battalion, Missouri Home Guard

*John C. PITTS, Union, Capt. Richardson's Company C, Hickory County, Battalion, Osage County Regiment, Missouri Home Guard

Carroll Pitts,Union Regiment, 8th Missouri S. M. Cav. Regiment Name Expanded: 8th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry COMPANY: C Rank In: Lieutenant Rank In Expanded: Lieutenant Rank Out: Lieutenant Rank Out Expanded: Lieutenant Film Number: M390 roll 38

*He does not have a pension. He was in one of these units that no one knew what to do with after the war! In 1863 Congress set up a Commission to study what to do with these units and to decide the claims of these men. Your John C. Pitts is mentioned somewhere in these documents. To what extent I have no way of knowing.
These records are not indexed and are grouped under Archive Record Groups, meaning you have to go through all the records to find who you are looking for. To search them involves a search fee based on time it takes to locate the person. Some of the men have additional records under the US Adjutant General's Office. If this is the case then there is more time needed to locate these additional records.

John Carroll Pitts was buried on the home place of his father but later his body was moved to the Hopewell Cemetary in Polk Co., MO.
