Herbert R. Brown, a longtime area farmer, died Friday, June 29, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. He was 95.
He was born on Feb. 28, 1910 in McCurtain, Okla., to Hugh and Ola Brown. In 1937, in a flight from the dust bowls in the Midwest, the family moved to Oregon and settled on Kiger Island, where they farmed.
Five years later, Herbert brought a farm on Stahlbusch Island.
Herb was self-educated. This, plus his love of farming, led to a very successful career. He is known for several innovations in the mid-valley, brnging the first mechanized cherry picker to the area and the first modern vegetable cultivator. After he retired from farming in 197, he sold the farm and moved to his current residence on Peoria Road. There he raised cherries and Christmas trees.
He loved to travel and spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Laura; his daughter, Barbara Ellis of Corvallis; sister Marie Arnwine of McCurtain, Okla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Monty H. Brown, proceeded him in death.
A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 1. Burial was at Crystal Lake Cemetery.
Memorials in memory of Herbert Brown can be made to either the Benton Hospice Service or meals on Wheels, in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St. Corvallis, OR 97330.
