29 years old & a barber, Son of Frank Nelson and Caroline Nelson of Stockholm, Wisconsin. Husband of Anna Nelson and father to sons George W. Jr. and Victor Q.. Died on the Sea Wing ferry disaster on Lake Pepin on the Missisippi during a storm with 97 other people. A relative recalls the story that although George was a good swimmer and survived the initial capsizing, his friend pushed a large piece of wood toward him to use as a float but it was near dark and it hit him in the head and he fell unconscious and drowned. Number 16 on the photo refers to the photo collage of victims made after the tragedy and for the memorial by Redwing photographer J.D. Kellogg using photos submitted by relatives.
His grave has never been found. He may have been buried on the family farm in Stockholm, WI.
