Charles Dietrich Koppelman, known as "Dick" Koppelman, was the second of the three children of Henry Ludwig/Louis Koppelman (1864-1934) and Caroline Charlotte Walker Koppelman (1867-1920). Charles grew up on his parents' small truck farm in Gardenville, Maryland, just northeast of the city of Baltimore. He went to work at the Singer Company, and was employed there as a machinist all his life. Raab (1897-1976), the daughter of John Andrew Raab (1873-1937) and Alberta Barbara Harpel Raab (1875-1947).

Dick and Goldie had one son, Charles John "Buck" Koppelman (1927-2001).
