Birth: 1728
Providence County
Rhode Island, USA
Death: Apr. 23, 1778
Montgomery County
Pennsylvania, USA

Revolutionary War Soldier. He was the regimental Quartermaster of the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment which came from Providence County. The 2nd Regiment arrived at Valley Forge with 335 men and left the encampment with only 233 fit for duty. Waterman's remains are near the granite obelisk across the road from the Valley Forge Chapel. His is the only individual grave marked with a monument; it was placed there in 1901 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Waterman died of smallpox. Records indicate the 20th or the 23rd as the date of death. Waterman was married to Martha Dyer, and had one son, Thomas, who it is thought also died in the revolution. The couple also had seven daughters: Nancy Winsor, Mary Mitchell, Eunice Tinkham, Freelove Mitchell, Elizabeth Eddy, Martha Corey, and Phebe. [I'd generally not list all of the children, but received an e-mail from a 6th great granddaughter of Waterman; she kindly supplied the approximate birth year. Other descendants might find a connection too.]
John Waterman was serving under the command of Col. Israel Angell who was his third cousin. Another third cousin Col. Christopher Greene was also at Valley Forge as was Col John Angell. Another relative George Olney who was a civilian auditor who worked as quartermaster and secretary for General Nathanael Greene.
