Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company G, 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry on July 23, 1861. He would go on to render brave and distinguished service on May 6, 1864, and would be awarded the CMOH for his actions that day. His citation for the Medal reads "Voluntarily and under a heavy fire from the enemy, Brown three times crossed the field of battle with a load of ammunition in a blanket on his back, thus supplying the Federal forces, whose ammunition had nearly all been expended, and enabling them to hold their position until reinforcement arrived, when the enemy were driven from their position." Prior to the battle he had rose in rank, receiving promotions to Corporal on August 5, 1862, and to Sergeant on May 5, 1863. Having re-enlisted, he was transferred out of the 72nd New York Infantry, and into Company C, 120th New York Infantry when his unit's original enlistments expired on June 23, 1864. He would go on to see the war though to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on June 3, 1865 at Albany, New York. His Medal was awarded to him on June 23, 1896, thirty-three years after his act of bravery. In 1902 he published the work " The History of the Third Regiment, Excelsior Brigade, 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry." (bio by: Russ)
