Prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he lived in Woburn, Massachusetts, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Costello. He had attended Woburn High School and was employed at the Converse Rubber Co. in Malden, Massachusetts. He entered the Navy on Aug. 8, 1943, and after Boot Camp he was assigned to the U.S.S. WASP. "He had been awarded many Service Stars for his action in many of the major sea encounters of the South Pacific. Having survived these major battles, he was killed in action somewhere in the Pacific Theatre of Operations on March 19, 1945./ Besides Mr. and Mrs. Costello of Woburn, Herbert was survived by a younger brother, Albert, of Wakefield [Massachusetts]." - MEMORIAL 1946, GOLD STAR HEROES [AND] HONOR ROLL, published for St. Charles Borromeo Church, Woburn, Mass., by the Archdiocese of Boston, p. 32.

His remains were either not recovered, or were buried at sea, but he is memorialized by the American Battle Monuments Commission Tablets, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
