According to stories told often by daughter Becky Finesilver, her parents Sara and Hyman Balaban and Grandfather David Louis Carter emigrated from the cities of Soroki (Soroca) and Yumpol (Yampol) in the region of the Republic of Moldova. Those cities bordered the Dneister River which flowed to the Black Sea. The area was known at the time as White Russia or Bessarabia.
