Elizabeth Wood Hunt Smith
Birth: Mar. 17, 1910
Camden County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Jun. 17, 1974
Voorhees Township
Camden County
New Jersey, USA

Elizabeth Wood Hunt was born on March 17, 1910, at the home of her parents, James Wood Hunt and Alice Wills Clement Hunt, at 45 Avondale Avenue, in Haddonfield, New Jersey. She was the third and youngest child, having two older brothers, Alfred Hunt, called "Al," and James Horace Hunt, who was nicknamed "Sim." Elizabeth was usually called "Liz" by her family and friends.

Her parents were quite well-to-do until the stock market crash of 1929.

She married Howard Hampton Smith on October 9, 1935, at Grace Episcopal Church in Haddonfield. Although her wedding dress appears black in the photo taken right before the ceremony, it was actually a dark blue velvet.

After her marriage, she and Howard first lived in an apartment on King's Highway in Haddonfield, next to the Haddon Fortnightly building.

Her first child, a daughter, was born September 27, 1942, but lived only a couple of days.

Her first born child was Howard Hampton Smith, Jr., called "Hampy" as a small child, and later called "Hamp."

Her second child was always called "Jim" by his friends.

Liz, Howard, Hamp, and Jim moved to their home in the woods on Gibbsboro-Kresson Road, Voorhees Township in 1953, where she lived until her death in 1974.

She was a fulltime homemaker, and enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, bridge, knitting, and embroidery. She was renowned for her hospitality, and always set a formal table for dinner.

She died of a massive heart attack suffered while she was napping. She is buried at Colestown Cemetery, Cherry Hill, Camden County, New Jersey, and her husband was buried next to her in 1985.

I want to thank Georgia Lass for finding, clearing, and photographing my mother-in-law's marker!
