He arrived in Vietnam on January 2 1968 where he was assigned to and serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
Toward mid-July the Battalion was heli-lifted near Hill 715 in the Huong Hoa District west of the Ca Lu airfield to continue participating in Operation SCOTLAND II in Quang Tri Province. On July 13, Company B moved out along a trail west of Hill 715 when the point of the patrol was hit with a command detonated mine wounding and killing a Marine. An attempt was made to recover the casualties but the Marines were unable to move forward because of the heavy enemy fire and had to pull back with eight wounded.
At first light on July 14, efforts were made to recover the dead and missing Marine, but Company B was hit with a barrage 82 mm mortar wounding several men and had to withdraw. Company A, approaching by a different route in the recovery effort was hit by four command detonated mines that killed four Marines and wounded six men before the recovery effort was competed that the Marines withdrew to an LZ (Landing Zone) to evacuate the casualties. PFC Spierowksi was one of the casualties, he was killed in action as a result of fragmentation wounds from a hostile mine.
