Joseph Caldwell, per the book "North Fork Country" by Bob Powers, is the person that told Mr Hamilton who had set up a bar across the street from Mr Caldwell's home, which consisted of two barrels and a board for the bar and a tent for the buildings, to take it down the road to the flat area. Hence, the town was first called "Whiskey Flats".
Mr Caldwell also attempted to help the Indians. He was asked by the Indians to keep their guns, so that the soldiers would not take them. While he had the guns the soldier came and lined up about 30 Indians and shot them in 1863. This action was totally uncalled for. The Indians in the Kern River Valley were known to be very peaceful.
