Billie Lee Brewer, 59, of Ponca, was taken home by the Lord on Saturday, July 29, 2006, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Services were Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Ponca, with the Revs. Sara Simmons and Chuck Rager officiating. Burial was in Ponca City Cemetery.
Billie Lee Brewer was born April 25, 1947, in Sioux City, to William F. and Audrey W. (Caldwell) Brown. She was raised in Ponca, where she met her high school sweetheart, Robert Rex Brewer. They married July 11, 1962, in Yankton, S.D. The couple made their home in Ponca, where Billie worked for the ASCS Office. They were members of First Presbyterian Church, where she was the organist and helped lead music for Sunday school.
In 1973, they moved to Norfolk, Neb., where she worked for Lee's Jewelry and enjoyed raising her girls. In 1981, they moved to Sioux City, where she worked for the Sioux City Public Library for nearly 20 years. During that time, Billie was actively involved in her church as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer to visit homebound church members. She also delivered meals for Meals on Wheels.
In 1999, they returned home to Ponca, where she was employed as a clerk at the NRD office. They became members of United Methodist Church, where she served God with her many talents, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and helping with special projects. She was also active on the library board, where she assisted with the preservation and restoration of Carnegie Library.
Billie was a very loving and devoted wife, companion and best friend to her husband of 44 years. She was unfailingly supportive and could always be found at the dances where Bob's band was playing. Their relationship deepened through the years as they enjoyed traveling, camping, dancing and entertaining friends and family.
Words cannot do justice to describe what a wonderful mother and grandmother Billie was. She provided guidance and support with an incredible amount of love and a playful sense of humor. She led her family by her faith in God. She always had time to talk or listen and to play with the kids. She loved to sing, play the piano, read books, do crossword puzzles, write letters, play with her cats and spoil her grandchildren. God gave Billie a kind and generous spirit which led her to always put others' needs before her own. Her last days were made comfortable by her family and Hospice of Siouxland. She will be sorely missed by her family, her friends and her community.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; three daughters and their husbands, Robin and Mark Neumeier of Lincoln, Neb., Dawn and Troy Bostwick of Ponca and Melissa and Chris Brown of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Justin Neumeier and his girlfriend, Lacey Dempsey of Springfield, Mo., Adam Neumeier of Lincoln, Jessica and Aaron Bostwick of Ponca and Anna Brown of Lincoln; mother and father-in-law, Dorothy and Herb McMillan; a sister, Choni Brown of Ponca; a sister-in-law and her husband, Judie and Rod Bauman of Ponca; a brother-in-law and his wife, Mark and Becky Brewer of Orleans, Ind.; aunts, uncles, cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and father-in-law, Rex Brewer.
