Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Idaho Territory Governor. Born in Union County, Indiana, Thomas Warren Bennett graduated from the law school at Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw) University in 1854. He joined the law practice of Judge John Yaryan in Liberty, Indiana, and soon thereafter was elected to the Indiana State Senate. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Bennett resigned from the Senate, joined the Union Army, and raised a company of men who became the 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was commissioned as their Captain in April, 1861. By October of 1861 he was promoted to Major of the 36th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and as Colonel and commander of the 69th Indian Volunteer Infantry in 1862. As the Commander of the 69th regiment, Colonel Bennett served under General Ulysses S. Grant in all his campaigns from the battle at Memphis to the surrender of Vicksburg,and participated in the Red River Campaign. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteer on March 5,1865. At the war’s end he returned to Indiana, again served in the State Senate and also served as the Mayor of Richmond, Indiana. In 1871 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as the Governor of the Idaho Territory, and he served from October 24, 1871 until December 6, 1875. In 1874 Bennett was elected as a Delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Idaho Territory, and served from March 4, 1875 until June 23, 1876. His election was successfully contested by his opponent. Returning to Indiana, Bennett served as the Mayor of Richmond, Indiana from 1877 until 1883, and again from 1885 until 1887. He died in Richmond, Indiana on February 2, 1893. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
