When arriving at the fort he found only a handful of men, the rest having left earlier with Col. H. C. Bankhead, they having been alerted to Forsyth's predicament, by Scouts S. E. "Jack" Stilwell and Pierre Trudeau, who had escaped from the Island the first night.
Donovan then recruited several civilians and started back for the Island. In route, he located Col. Louis H. Carpenter, and the 10th Cavalry on the plains, and together, made the historic ride, bring relief to the besieged Scouts at Beecher Island.
For this and other actions of the same time period, Col. Carpenter was awarded a Medal of Honor.
Later, the Scouts, and surviving widows, including Mrs. Donovan, were awarded a military pension, under a special act of Congress.
