MOJAVE One Mojave High School student was killed and four other young people injured when the vehicle in which they were riding went out of control and overturned while traveling southbound on State Highway 14 near Mojave last Thursday at 7:10 a.m.
Killed in the accident that was witnessed by more than 60 students was Koury Davis of California City.
Davis and three of his classmates including his girlfriend, Lindsay Woolford age 17, were being driven to school in Mojave by Dannon West, a 1999 graduate of MHS.
California Highway Patrol officer Don Todd said West was attempting to pass a school bus and entered the northbound lane of Highway 14 but apparently did not see an oncoming tractor trailer. Natasha Woolford, age 17, who was riding in the front seat of the 1988 Chevy Nova tried to grab the steering wheel in an attempt to maneuver the car out of the path of the truck. West tried to turn the wheel to the left and the vehicle went out of control ejecting three students including Davis from the back seat. Natasha Woolford and Curcinda Carson sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from Antelope Valley Hospital.
Davis, a senior at MHS and star football player for the Mustangs died of his injuries on the way to the hospital, said Todd.
Todd said the vehicle was traveling in excess of 70 mph and only the driver and front seat passengers were wearing seat belts.
Students were met by crisis intervention staff when they arrived at school and were offered counseling before classes were suspended for the day.
