Pioneer in Gospel Music Dr. Mattie Moss Clark was a songwriter, vocalist, pianist, arranger and spirit filled choir director. For more than 25 years she was president of the National Music Dept. of the Church of God in Christ. She was also the mother of the famed gospel group The Clark Sisters and was the first choir director to teach three part harmony to a choir. Dr. Clark organized the Southwest Michigan State Choir of the Church of God in Christ after moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1958. The 300 voice choir had its first recording "Save Hallelujah" on the Savoy label in 1963. She became director of the Charles H. Mason Memorial choir for many years. Dr. Clark went on to found the Clark Conservatory of Music in Detroit; and also helped launch the careers of such gospel greats such as Walter Hawkins, Hezekiah Walker, Richard Smallwood and many others. Dr. Mattie Moss Clark recorded more than 35 albums in her lifetime and became the first artist with a gold album. Following her death in 1994 she was later inducted in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1997.
