W. H. Andre Obituary
On Thursday afternoon of last week occurred the death of William Harvey Andre who was kicked by a horse on Monday previous while doing chores at the home of a neighbor southwest of Estherville (Emmet Co., Iowa). Mr. Andre was born in Columbia (Columbiana) County, Ohio, on January 27, 1850 and was therefore 71 years, 3 months and 16 days old at the time of his death on May 12th. (1921). He was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Hogle January 1, 1871, and to this union were born five children, one of who together with the mother had preceded Mr. Andre to the world beyond.. The four remaining children are Mrs. Olive E. McLeod of Dows, Iowa; William C. Andre of Manilla, Iowa; Mrs. Jennie G. Aikman of Audubon; and James Frank Andre of Estherville. There are also eleven grand children and three sisters and two brothers who survive to mourn his untimely death.
After moving to Iowa Mr. Andre made his home at Manilla until in 1900 when he bought a farm near Estherville from which time he lived in various places including a term of years on the farm in this community. In 1914 he held a general sale and then moved to Ohio where he lived three years but retaining his land interests in Iowa he returned once more to Estherville and Manilla in 1918 and has since lived partly with his children during the spring and summer months and in Florida during the winter, however he has called Estherville his home during all this time. He had just returned from his winter trip in Florida a week or ten days before the unfortunate affair that caused his death.
Mr. Andre was a good Christian man, a faithful supporter of the church and for many years superintendent of a little Sunday School in his community. At the time of his death he was a member of the Methodist church at Superior, Iowa. Just a week before his death he had attended church in Estherville with his neighbor and friend, Mr. Charles Reed. On returning with him after church, he gave unmistakable testimony of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. Together with others he joined in the singing of his favorite hymn, "My Jesus, I love Thee." He was anxious for the salvation of men and so expressed himself about certain ones among his own as wall as many neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal Church with the pastor. Rev. J. W. LaGrone in charge. The Rev. F. L. Kruwell of Superior was also present and assisted in the service. The body was shipped to Manilla on Saturday morning where he was laid beside his wife. (Note: William Harvey Andre is buried next to his son, John Enoch; Mary Hogle Andre is buried in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.)
