Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain and Assistant Adjutant General of the staff of Brigadier General Frederick W. Lander, then as Colonel of the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He led his men at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg and later frequently commanded his brigade. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services".
