William Saunders came to Lebanon from Tennessee in a wagon and carry all for the women and children to ride in headed for Springfield, but came by to see an old friend, Lot Murphy and was persuaded by Colonel Miles Vernon, Matt Hooker and Lot Murphy to take squatter's claim about two miles east of the present town of Lebanon. This claim grew into a quarter section on the headwaters of the Dry Glaize. Here in the old log house which is still standing (not in 2009), he reared a large family and held a substantial place in the community.
During the Civil War, Union soldiers came for Uncle Billy twice but he evaded them.
According to family history, William Saunders had a heavy beard. As he pulled his grand-daughter, Mary Wilma Saunders, on a sled, he was sprayed in the face by a skunk. Impossible to clean the spray quickly enough, he died. Told by Elizabeth Betty Luallin, youngest daughter of Mary Wilma. Courtesy of Joyce Garcia. 2012.
