Mike Edwards
Birth: May 31, 1948
London Borough of Ealing
Greater London, England
Death: Sep. 3, 2010
Devon, England

Musician. He was the original cellist with the music group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). He began his music career initially as a vocalist, performing in a BBC production of "Carmen" while a child. He later learned to play the cello, receiving training in classical music, while studying at the Royal Academy of Music. As a founding member of ELO from the group's inception in 1972 until his departure in 1975, Edwards contributed instrumentally on their self-titled debut album, followed by "ELO 2" (1973), "On the Third Day" (1973) and "Eldorado, A Symphony" (1974). He will probably be best remembered for his unique and bizarre way of cello playing, as he often plucked the strings with an orange or grapefruit. Edwards later joined the Buddhist faith, changing his name to Deva Pramada; he would continue his music career, performing and composing. He died in a freak auto accident, when a large bale of hay rolled on top of the vehicle he was driving, crushing it. (bio by: C.S.)
