|Birth: ||Nov. 15, 1766|
New Jersey, USA
|Death: ||Sep. 23, 1849|
Garret Cozine was BAPTISED on the above dates, according to the church record. He was the eleventh and last child of Antje Pieterse Staats and the Reverend Cornelius Cosine, Domine of the Dutch Reform Church at Conewago Colony in Pennsylvania. The burial place of Antje has not yet been found; Low Dutch women of that period retained their maiden names.
Readington Dutch Church, where Garret was baptized, was then in Somerset Co, New Jersey. He married Margaret List, daughter of John George and Margaret List, and they had eight children.
After Rev. Cosine's death in 1786, the Conewago Colony broke up, ten families going to Cayuga Lake NY and about fifty families to Kentucky who eventually formed the "Low Dutch Tract Company" in Henry County.
Garret Cozine lived his adult life around Harrodsburg, Mercer County, KY, moving to Hendricks County, Indiana, at age 70 to live near his grandson. They owned a large farm and lived near Clayton Indiana to their deaths and are buried there.
When we visited Clayton Cemetery in 2005, Garret's tombstone was missing and had been gone for a few years. We were trying to raise $850 to replace the marker. We searched around and finally found it face up a few yards away, almost covered with sod. It was unreadable, until we cleaned it up and reset it.
