He went to sea at an early age and spent most of his life there. He married Cornelia Crawford in 1831. They had three children: Cornelia Adams Upham, Susan Rich Upham, and James Crawford Upham. Both a master and 1st officer of merchant ships.

Bark Montgomery, Hooper, (of Providence), from Zanzibar, Feb 28, Table Bay, C G [Cape of Good Hope], April 4th, with dates, &c, to Rufus Green, of Providence.
