Barrel-chested Andrew Krakow
was a likable guy with a hearty
laugh and a commitment to pro-
tecting Wisconsin's natural re-
sources, his co-wokers said Tues-
Krakow, who was shot and killed
by a 13-year-old boy Tuesday in
rural Montello, worked hard and
performed well as a state Depart-
ment of Natural Resources conser-
vation warden, said his supervisor,
March had been Krakow's boss
since Krakow became the warden
in Marquette County about two
years ago. Before that, Krakow was
a warden in Marinette County for
10 years and in Walworth County
"He was a likable fellow,"
March said. "He was well-liked by
his fellow wardens. He believed
strongly in the warden program
and the job itself. He was deeply
committed to it.
"There was a presence about
him," March added. "He wasn't a
shy person. He said what was on his
mind. He asked hard questions, in-
telligent questions, and went about
his job and did it."
March said Krakow, 41, was a
"deep-thinking person" and was
particularly interested in environ-
mental enforcement cases, such as
one he had investigated recently in
which chemicals had been used to
[Winter Hess] said Krakow liked to work
with kids and had taught fifth
graders about his job at a Marinette
County Forestry Department camp
Krakow was a fun-loving guy
with a big laugh and a love for
country-western music, Hess said.
He said he wasn't surprised when he
heard that Krakow had been helping
the Marquette County Sheriff's
Department when he was killed.
"I wasn't surprised that he was
lending a hand to another agency
because he always helped out,"
Hess said. "He always worked well
with the local agencies."...
